Ton Poultney Unit 48 Narrative Image Making

Task 1
Name:
Heather Louise Longbottom

Title Of Project:
Tiny FMP (Pampered Pooches)

Format:
Digital

Concept:
The concept of my tiny final major project is about how people treat their pets like a member of the family I.e. brother, sister or a child. The images in this sequence will be of the dogs and not pictures of the people.

What are you going to produce?
By the end of this project I am going to have produced three professionally printed final images that are all documentary shots. The final images will be all split images so that there will be one image of the dog and one image of an object that is used to ‘humanize’ the dogs. The images will also come from 4 shoots.

How are you going to produce it?
To get the shots that I will need to complete this project I will have to spend a few hours at each house so that I can get an array of images of the dogs as they get less interested that I am there, so they act as they usually would. The images that I will be taking will all be shot with natural lighting unless I do a night shoot then I might have to use the flash on the camera or a flash gun. Because I am planning on using natural lighting I will have an aperture of about 3.5 – 5 so that more light can be in the image. I will have a shutter speed of 1/200s so that the photograph is taken fast enough in case the dog(s) move but not too fast so that the light is altered. The ISO on my camera will be on auto due to the changes in light when I am moving around the room. The images that I plan on taking will be all in focus.

What resources will you need?
For this project I will be using the Canon 600D to take the photographs and to edit the images I will be using Photoshop on a Mac. I will also need access to the dogs. The dogs that I will be taking the images of are; my Aunties chiwawas, Tips and Socks, my cousins husky, Thunder and my dad’s two whippet/ greyhounds, Murphy and Nip.

William Wegman

I have chosen to look at William Wegman’s photography as it fits in my theme of pampered dogs. William Wegman puts his dog in human clothes and positions, which in most cases is classed as over pampering. This makes the images have humor as people consider it ‘cute’. The subjects in the images are usually centered which isn’t something that I am planning on doing. William also shoots his images in the studio which is also something I’m not doing.

Martin Parr

Martin Parr is a good photographer to look at, especially his project Luxury, for my project and theme as it is to do with people who pamper themselves and my project is all to do with dogs being pampered. Martin Parr shoots this set of images on location which is what I will be doing with my images so that the viewers can see more of where the dogs live.

Elliot Erwitt

Elliot Erwitt’s images are funny due to the subject of dog being pampered as much as they are i.e the dogs wearing human clothing such as coats or goggles, or them being carried in a bag. Elliot Erwitt is a documentary photographer which is what I would like to portray in my images.

Task 2

Task 3
For one of our lessons we did a critique. We had to put three pieces of work up on the wall and let the group evaluate our work, while we evaluated theirs. The work that I put up is one finished piece and two single images that weren’t finished. We were told that we couldn’t tell anyone what the narrative of the images was. There was a sheet that we had to put up next to our images for people to evaluate our current work. The sheets had four sections on it; what is going well in this project? What is the project about? What is not working so well with the images? What suggestions can you make to help complete the project? Some of the comments on my sheet were irrelevant but will still be included.

What is going well in this Project?

o Each separate image is very effective, cute subjects.
o The depth of field in the photos work well.
o Composition is very good.
o Images are effective and has clear narrative.
o Cute.

What is the project about?

o Dogs
o Documentary (Dogs)
o Life of a dog
o Dogs – they have feelings too

What is not working so well with the images?

o It’s not very clear what the narrative is.
o The lighting could be better.
o Maybe just use one dog in order to create a clear narrative.
o What is narrative? Make more clear.
o Put pugs in work

What suggestions can you make to help complete the project?
o Use different lighting and backgrounds
o Pugs.

With this information I have decided that I am going to change some of my ideas. My proposal says that all of my images will be in focus, there will only be the room in the background and there will be no people in the shots. Now that I have had this critique I have decided that for some of the images that I am going to produce may have the dogs family in the background but they wont be in focus, there will only be the dog(s) in focus so that they stay the focal point. I am also going the make the images square format, using Photoshop, this is so that I can make the images work better when I finally put them together.

Tasks 4/5
I believe that I carried out this project very well as I used the time I had wisely and I stuck to the plan. This meant that I completed all of the tasks on time including the written tasks that I would usually struggle with. Although I managed to get three shoots done I was unable to complete the last shoots and the owners of the dogs weren’t available at any of the times that I needed them. Before the group critique I do believe that my images matched my proposal to a satisfactory level but not that I have changes a few of my ideas the images also reflect these ideas as well.
With final image 1 (Tips) the overall image shows the concept of how the dog is treated but the images themselves are very different and do not match each other. The image to the left is softer that the image on the right, the lighting is also different as the ISO has been changed in each photograph. If I had put the ISO down when taking the photograph of the dog the image would have been the same lighting as the dog bag. Although the angle is different in both of the images I think that they do work well with each other.
Just like with the first final image the second one (Thunder) has a softer image. The image on the right isn’t as strong an image as the image of the dog as the steam from the cooker had got on the lens making the image softer than the image of the dog. The image of the dog could have been lit better than it was as the background is too dark and you cant make out the detail in the sofa. I also like the image of the dog at it is centered which does make it the main focal point.
This is final image 3 (Murphy) out of all of my images I think that this image is the best out of the set as the main focus is clear in both of the images. The lighting is the same in each of the images which means that the images has good aesthetically qualities. Although this is a good final image to improve this image I would have re shot the images of the dog so that the dog was in the center of the image.
