Tom Poultney Unit 23 Experimental Photography

Task 1

For task 1 we had to create a 3 frame narrative. We had to be in groups of two or three and had to choose a theme then create 3 images within the group representing this theme. These images could be made using any technique that we wanted. We did this to get a feel for what our project would be like and to consider what the order of the book could be. After we had created our images we had a class critique to discuss what we thought of the images, how well the techniques were used and to see if we would be carrying on the same theme for our self negotiated projects.

For our second task we were working by ourselves and we had to take one theme and make three images in three different ways (using different techniques). The images in my book will be telling the story of Alice in Wonderland, so my three images will also be about the Tim Burton version of Alice In Wonderland. The techniques that I used are; image and text, montage and image layering. We did this so that we could see if we liked the project that we had chosen and what techniques we might want to use.

Task 2

Name:
Heather Longbottom

Title of Project:
What Happened in Wonderland

Theme:
Alice in Wonderland scenes made with montages and image and text

Format:
Digital

Concept:
The story of Alice in Wonderland through experimental photography with a minimal amount of people within the images. The images that I will be creating are going to be made using montage and I will be doing my best to make them either look realistic or surreal. I will be making the story through objects rather than people.

What Are You Producing?
I will be producing a book that has a continual theme of Alice in Wonderland and has been sent off to be printed professionally. I will also be producing a research page of images and photographers that use techniques similar to what I will be using.

How Are You Going To Produce It?
Digitally, Photoshop and studio (home and college) I will be taking the images digitally and then using Photoshop to create my photomontages.

What Will You Need?

Camera (Canon 600D), Mac, Photoshop and access to the internet for research.

Graham Rawle

I have looked at Graham Rawle as he is a photomontager and I will be using this technique to create my images. I like the aesthetic. I also like Graham’s technique as he has made the sets his self and hasn’t used people but has used dolls.

Christina Di Middel

Christina Di Middel’s images fit in with what I will be doing as I will be creating a set of images that have a theme. Christina creates a story with these images. Narrative. Mixed.  She also uses image and text which I might use to put quotes in my book.

 Peter Kennard

Just like Graham Rawle I have looked at Peter Kennard because he uses montage in his work. Peter Kennard also puts a message in his images. Not many people in the images, the use of other objects are enough to tell the story and this is what I will be trying to do.

These images are some that I have found off of the internet. I have chosen to put this set in my research as they are like what I would like to produce, a book/set of images that tell a story about a person/subject. Also amongst these mood boards is the character that I will base my book on.

Task 3

Edited Images

Task 4

So far on this project I have conducted a number of shoots in order to create all of the images that I need to produce. I have used two cameras to soot my shoots in this project, both of the cameras are canons, one is a canon 600D and the other one is a canon G12. The shoots were done in various locations in Leeds including, Lotherton Hall, Kirkstall Abby, Horsforth, Pudsey and various other locations. I have had to shoot all of my images at the same or at a similar angle to each other as I will be montaging them together to create my final 21 images. I have found that it is harder to get things at the same that I first thought so have had to take a large number of images on each shoot so that I can better montage all of my images. Another reason that I have taken so many images is so that I am not limited for choice when I start to create my final images. It isn’t possible to pin point all of the apertures, ISOs and shutter speeds of the shoots as the changed on a regular basis due to lighting and the time of day I went on a shoot. All of my shoots were either shot in a portable studio with controlled lighting of on location in Leeds. Next I will be editing these images to create new montaged images, will be doing this in photoshop. In order to complete this project I will have to produce a book with my final images in it. There are many ways that I can go about making a book, there is online or by hand. If I were to produce it by hand there would be several ways in which I could bind it, I could use a number of stitches to bind the pages together or I could use a spiral binder. The pages of a handmade book could also be made in different ways; I could make the paper myself by mushing up newspaper and water I could then print the images off and then stick them to the new paper that I have just made, I could also print the images off on photographic paper and then bind the pages together or I could make a book that uses regular, everyday paper and have my images printed and stuck into my new book. On the other hand I could send my book off to be printed online, where all I have to do is send in my images, tell them the order that I wish the pages to be in and they will print the book and bind it in a way that suits me and sent it to me. There are a number of sites that I could do this on, some of them are; Photo Box, Photo Bucket and Blurb. If I used the second method of creating a book, which is to have the book made online then I would have a guaranteed professional finish to the book.

Task 6

I believe that this project has gone rather well as I have completed the work on time and to a satisfactory standard. This project has had its negatives and positives throughout, such as trying to find the correct scenes and objects that I needed to create all of the 21 final pieces that I ended with but on a positive I did manage to get all of the shoots that I needed. Something that I need to work on to progress to the next level is completing the written work at the same time as I am producing my final images rather that leaving it until the end as I start to stress about it and the quality drops. Due to setting myself the task of having 21 final images and 21 quote pages to produce a lot of my time for this project was spent taking the images that left me less time to edit my images and complete the written tasks. Although I have a range of final images in varying styles that fit in with my proposal and research of relevant practitioners I do have one or two final images that do not fit in fully with my proposal and this Is due to me not setting a limit to the amount of time that I could spend on one task so I ran out of time before I could revisit them images, although that aren’t the strongest of images they still fit in with the project of experimental photography and still set the scene for that page in the book. All of the images that I have used are high quality. Due to my book telling the story of what happened to when Alice when she went to Wonderland I have had to get 4 images off of online to finish the book, however these images have been edited using photoshop to create new ones using my own photography.
