Tom Poultney Unit 32 Experimental Imagery in Photography

Intervention
Over the next few sessions I will be looking at different ways in that I can promote myself through ‘big time’ advertising i.e. billboard and wall mounts etc. In the sessions I will be creating interventions that are to go into a specific space or environment. So that so can produce work to the best of my abilities I will be looking at other artists who are well known for creating interventions.

Digital Intervention
This is the first session that we had on the project so we didn’t have any images to use in this time, so for the purposes of test images we were aloud to go online and get images off of Google. To edit these images we had to use Photoshop. Because this project is about putting images related to the area in the spaces we had chosen. I chose to use Disney characters on buildings in Disney Studios and other Disney related buildings. I also produced and images of the Sydney Opera House with a clown fish on the side of it. This intervention is a good idea to start you thinking of what can go where in terms of buildings and the images on them but because the image are off of Google I wont be using this technique as I want to use my own photographs.

Photographic Interventions
For this lesson we are learning about and do doing photographic interventions. In this lesson we went out into Leeds city centre and take pictures of things that could go into or onto different surfaces. I chose to take pictures of building that are points of interest in Leeds but if I can’t get them at the correct angle or side I will take the images of normal buildings in the centre. I will then be taking pictures of the golden owls in Millennium Square and the Leeds crest on the Civic Hall and these will be the photographs that I will be putting on the buildings. To get the images on to the buildings I will be using Photoshop. I liked this technique of using Photoshop to put the images into the spaces but they tend to look crewed and if you don’t have the angle of the two images the same the top images doesn’t always fit right.

Physical Intervention
To complete the session that we learnt about physical intervention we had to go back into Leeds City Centre and physically place an object into a space. We could choose any object and any space. For this task I chose to buy a plant to put into places that you wouldn’t usually find a small potted plant. These spaces tended to be run down areas and parts of Leeds i.e. the market, which doesn’t get that much attention by cleaners. We also did another session on this intervention where we had to go around and place a piece of A4 white paper over things in college, because we were in side college I thought it would be a good idea to put it over the important parts of different posters and objects around college. Out of the interventions that we have completed this is my favourite intervention as the images are much stronger that the images from the other two interventions.

Name:
Heather Louise Longbottom

Title Of Project:
Experimental Imagery in Photography (A Little Bit of Colour in a Dark Place)

Format:
Digital

Concept:
The concept of experimental imagery in photography project is about putting site-specific images into a space either digitally or physically.

What are you going to produce?
By the end of this project I am going to have produced a set of professionally printed final images that are all created in the same way (digital / physical). My final images will all be of an area in Leeds that could be improved but there will be an object that you wouldn’t normally see in that space. This object will be small and colourful.

How are you going to produce it?
For me to complete this project I will have to go into Leeds City Centre and take photographs of different areas of Leeds that aren’t the best looking. I will take some of the images with the colourful objects in them so that I have covered the physical intervention part of the project and I will also take some of them without the objects in so that I can digitally edit the objects into the space after I have been in the studio and photographed the objects to create digital interventions. I will be trying out both ways of having the objects in the spaces so that I can choose which I believe looks the best and fits in with the project. At this stage I believe that I will like the physical interventions the best as I think the digital interventions will look crude. To complete the shoot(s) that will be outside I will have the camera on a tripod set to manual with the aperture at 22 to give it a wide depth of field this is because the shutter speed is quite slow so the camera needs as much light as it can get so having the camera on a tripod I will not get motion blur. To create good quality images I will have the ISO set to 100 to avoid noise so that I can enlarge the pictures. I will also take the pictures in RAW to ensure the quality of the photographs.

What resources will you need?
For this project I will be using the Canon 600D camera on a college tripod to take the photographs. Too edit the images I will be using Photoshop on a MacBook. I will also need to be aloud to go into Leeds and photograph the objects (a plant and a teddy) in different places. I will also require the two objects.

Andy Goldsworthy
I have chosen to research Andy Goldsworthy and his series ‘Leaves’ because he creates amazing pieces of abstract artwork. The part of his work that I will be following is the colours in places that don’t have much colour.

Michael Hughes
I like Michael Hughes work because he makes the normal look fun, he does this by putting a relevant souvenir over the monument. This is relevant to my work as I will be putting objects in different places although they won’t be the same as in these.

Rune Guneriussen
Rune Guneriussen’s work is the closest to what it is I am planning on doing. Guneriussen uses foreign objects in places that they shouldn’t be in to create abstract and amazing pieces of art / photographs. This is the element of his work that I am going to carry over into my work.

Guerrilla Gardening
Although what I am going to be doing to get my images is legal I wanted to take a look at guerrilla gardening, as the people that undertake this practise are just trying the brighten dark and grungy areas up. The work that is done in this practice is illegal as it is permanent and typically done for political reasons. I have come to the conclusion that on a more mellow level I am also doing guerrilla gardening.

Today in Tom’s lesson we had a group critique. We had to put 3 of our images up on the wall and as a class we got feed back on the work. The first section on the sheet is, Positives – What is working well with the project? The replies I got were –
o Good location, fit well with theme
o Nice idea, original and consistent
o All work as a series
o Good locations
o Good location images
o Good locations! ☺
o Work well as a series
o Its unusual, colour contrast
o Strong idea, locations of pics juxtapose well.

From this feedback I can tell that the images in this series are going to fit with my proposal as the images have the correct locations meaning that I have created juxtaposition of the images well. Although the positives are good the second section on the sheet is Negatives – Which areas of the project need developing? The comments were –
o More pictures ☺
o Closer shots?
o Make the flower more noticeable
o Close up on flower, show surroundings as well
o Focus more on the flower
o Flower too small focus better
o The flower/idea isn’t very clear – close up shots.
o Photos too dark
o Some are still too light

With the information I have got from this section there will be a change in the aesthetics of the shots that I will be doing. Some of the images will be closer up and some will still be in the style of the ones put into this critique. To improve my images I will also be making the images darker and the flower brighter to create more of a contrast. The last box on this sheet is, Advice for completing the project. There are less comments in this box but here they are –
o Maybe present in a box and they do work well as a series
o Work well as a series
o I agree book would be good!
o Get closer to the flower
o Work well as a series because they all look the same.

As some of my classmates have stated a book would be a good idea because then the images will be together as the series they are. Another thing that I will be doing so that I can complete the series is taking more images.
